Self development and help resources

Why do people typically seek out therapy?

Different seasons in life present a variety of different challenges for all of us.  These can be sudden changes such as death of a loved one or onset of chronic illness to more long-term issues dealt with for years.  These changes can challenge anyone’s ability to cope.  Therapy, whether short or longer term, can help you develop the tools you need to cope with these challenges and develop a health outlook.  This is true for individuals, families, and children of all ages.

What should I expect from our sessions?

Therapy varies greatly with the individual.  You customized sessions will be tailored to your goals, needs, and specific situation you are seeking help with.

From the first session, we will work to determine the areas of concern and the goals you have for therapy.  It is recommended that you come with a willingness to speak about your thoughts and feelings and explore your ideas.

I strongly encourage communication and openness in our sessions.  If you feel therapy is not progressing or you are not working on the goals you have in mind we should discuss these feelings together to make sure your therapy sessions are most beneficial.

During the first few sessions of therapy, we will work together to discover which goals might be best to begin work upon. These goals may change over time and usually do as therapy progresses. However, it is best not to worry about this. Just trust that together, we will find the best route for your own personal journey.

Are our sessions confidential?

Yes, unless where required by law.  Therapy sessions are completely confidential, and the issues we discuss together will never be shared with anyone.  I adhere to strict codes of confidentiality and protect your information completely.

The few exceptions for confidentiality are:

  • The client is a threat to harm yourself or others
  • The client is abusing others
  • Records are subpoenaed by court
